4 Holiday DIY Crafts to Create with the Little Ones!

Christmas is all about spending time with family and friends and making fun memories that will last a lifetime. This rings especially true when it comes to children. During this time of year, you may be thinking what fun it would be to make snow angels and go sledding, but we haven't gotten snow yet. So some indoor activities may be the best option for now until we see that first snow fall. Rather than sitting the kids down in front of a holiday movie, make lasting memories with DIY Christmas crafts the little ones will love! Here are a few DIY craft ideas you can start working on today!

1. Santa Advent Calendar
The kids will love helping Santa’s beard grow with fluffy cotton balls. By the 25th he will have the full monty! Here's what you'll need:

Construction paper
Glue
Cotton balls

To make:

1. Cut Santa’s face from white craft paper. Add texture with colored pencil. Cut pink cheeks, eyes, and nose from construction paper; glue to the face.

2. Cut the hat from red and white craft paper; glue to the face. Cut a long beard shape from white craft paper. Glue a large cotton ball at the point of the hat.

3. Write the dates of the month leading up to Christmas on the beard. Hang the calendar and set a bowl of cotton balls and a bottle of glue nearby.

2. Sparkly Snowflake Ornament Craft

There's nothing wrong with making snowflakes by cutting holes in paper, but we think these are just a little more jazzy. Your kids will love deciding which colors to use and, of course, bedazzling each flake. Here are the supplies you’ll need to make your own Popsicle Stick Snowflake Ornaments:

Popsicle Sticks (we used colored ones but plain would work too, you would just need to paint them)
Tacky Glue
Hot Glue Sticks and Hot Glue
Christmas Bells
Glitter Stickers
Silver Glitter
Tinsel Pom Poms and/or craft foam balls
Fabric Snowflakes
Twine for hanging

To make:

1. First you need to paint your Popsicle Sticks if you don’t already have colored sticks.

2. Next you need to hot glue your popsicle sticks together. Forming the shape of the snowflake, put a small bit of hot glue in between each popsicle stick. Once done, add a bit of hot glue to the back and add your twine for hanging. Adults should do this part.

3. Now is the fun part! Time to decorate!

3. Paper Plate Christmas Tree Craft

You'll soon find that you can make almost anything with paper plates. Just cut one into thirds and layer on top of one another. For the ornaments and garlands, use pom-poms and ribbons. Here's what you'll need:

Paper plate
Green acrylic paint
Paint brush
Scissors
Hole punch
Rribbon or yarn
Tape
Stapler
Brown cardstock paper or brown foam sheet
Star foam sticker
Sequins, small poms or embellishments
Glue

To make:

1. Start by painting your paper plate green. Let it dry completely. When your paper plate is dry, cut it into thirds, then cut one of the section a bit smaller. When you layer them together with the smallest one on top, you have a Christmas Tree shape.

2. Use your hole punch to punch six (6) holes across the bottom of each paper plate section. Cut a 12-inch section of ribbon for each paper plate section and lace them through the holes. Start by bringing the ribbon up from the back of the paper plate into the first hole and then continue through the holes, finishing with the excess ribbon hanging off the back of the paper plate. Tape the excess pieces of ribbon to the back of the paper plate to hold them in place. When you are finished lacing all your pieces, use a stapler to staple them together into your Christmas tree.

3. Finish you paper plate Christmas tree craft by stapling (or gluing) on a brown tree stump cut out from your brown paper and adding a foam star sticker at the top. Glue on any sequin or embellishments that you would like to decorate your paper plate Christmas Tree craft. Such a beautiful piece of artwork to display for the holiday!

4. Grinch Slime Craft

Slime is popular for its versatility, and the fact that it's extremely fun to play with! That's why your kids will enjoy mixing up a batch of Grinch-inspired slime—with a red heart to boot. Here's the ingredients you'll need:

1/2 Cup of Elmer’s Clear Glue
1/2 Cup of Liquid Starch
1/2 Cup of Water
Measuring Cup
Bowls and a spoon
Green food coloring
Green Glitter (LOTS!)
Red Heart Charm
Small bowl

To make:

1. In a bowl mix 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup of glue (make sure to really mix to combine completely). Next you can add in a drop of green food coloring. After you have your color mixed in, you can add in your green glitter to this step.

2. Then you’ll pour in 1/2 cup of liquid starch. You will see the slime immediately start to form and start sticking to your fork. Once it starts completely sticking, then switch to mixing with your hands for a few minutes until you feel the majority of the liquid incorporated into the slime.

Is There Too Much Iron In Your Well Water?

For homeowners whose water source comes from a well, there are some advantages, disadvantages, and ways in which you can ensure healthy drinking water from your well source. With the potential for contaminants to enter your well water more easily than from a municipal source, it's important to know about potential contaminants and how to protect your family from them. One of the most common water treatment problems found in well water is iron. So, this week, we're talking about iron in your well water.

While a trace amount of iron in your water isn't dangerous to your health, without the right water treatment, iron can lead to a metallic taste in food and drink. It can also cause issues with plumbing. If a home’s water is filled with iron, it may lead to plumbing issues. Excessive iron can leave behind a residue, which can then build up and cause clogging. When this occurs, homeowners may experience reduced water pressure or slow draining.

Not considered hazardous to health, but when the level of iron in water exceeds the DNR 0.3 mg/l limit, we experience red, brown, or yellow staining of laundry, glassware, dishes and other household items. Iron can be found in 3 different forms.

Ferrous iron (dissolved) — Although not visible, it is the most common type of iron. Later when oxygen is mixed with ferrous iron it stains sinks, toilets and laundry especially when bleach is added. To reduce levels of ferrous iron, softening and or filtration is performed.

Ferric Iron (suspended) — Ferric iron or brown water iron is oxidized and forms particles. Once these particles settle down, they can normally be seen in a glass of water. Sometimes these particles are too small to be seen and are very difficult to remove.

Iron bacteria — Iron bacteria is a general term given to iron that can leave a slimy growth or build up in toilet tanks and sometimes clogs filters, softeners and pipes. These bacteria are not harmful, but are considered a nuisance bacteria because of their difficulty in removing.

Is Your Laundry Truly Getting Clean?

If you've ever questioned whether the clothes coming out of your washer are actually clean, you're not alone. Laundry issues such as stiff towels or yellowing or greying clothing are not uncommon, and are likely caused by hard water. Fortunately, this is a water issue that can easily be rectified. In this week's blog, Lindyspring Lake of the Ozarks is sharing with you some information on how hard water affects the cleanliness and life of your clothing, and how a water softening or conditioning system can help.

Laundry & Hard Water Doesn't Mix
To understand why hard water is so tough on clothing, you first need to know that hard water contains dissolved compounds of calcium and magnesium. These minerals don't mix well with laundry detergents. The harder the water, the tougher it is on your laundry.

Hard water prevents water from mixing with detergent to form an effective cleaning agent. So, basically the calcium mineral bonds with the soap to create a curd that sticks to fibers and draws in more dirt, leaving your clothes dirtier than before you washed them. Over time, the residue can cause your clothing to turn a greyish or yellowish color, and make them feel stiff and crusty.

Studies have shown that clothing washed in hard water wear out 15% faster than clothing washed in soft water. However, rather than fixing the true issue at hand, most homeowners resort to using more detergent and hotter water, resulting in added expenses. This doesn't really fix the problem, and ultimately, you end up having to replace damaged clothing more often.

Fixing the Problem with Soft Water
If you suspect that you have hard water, you can do a simple DIY test to determine whether you have hard or soft water. While this test will be a great indicator of hard water, it will not tell you the hardness of your water. You'll need to have a professional test the exact hardness of your water. Follow these steps to put your water to the test.

1. Fill a Clear Container with Water
Fill your container about a third of the way to the top with water from your faucet. For our test, we have both hard water and soft water so you can see the difference in the end.

2. Squeeze in Some Pure Liquid Soap
Next, squirt about 10 drops of soap into your container. Pure liquid soap is best. Don’t use soap labeled as detergent because it is formulated with additives that will skew results of the test.

3. Shake Vigorously!
Shake your container for at least 10 seconds to mix up the soap and water in an attempt to make soapy bubbles. Don’t forget to put the cap on first!

4. Look for Suds and Water Clarity
If your container has a good amount of suds at the top, and the water underneath the bubbles becomes nice and clear, then you likely have soft water. However, if you don’t get many suds after shaking, and your water looks cloudy, that is a good indication you have hard water.
