Do You Know Where Your Drinking Water Comes From?

4/20/2018

When you turn on your faucet to get a drink of water, have you ever wondered where your drinking water comes from? Knowing where your water comes from is important because there could be contaminants in your water that could affect your health. If you live in the Lake of the Ozarks area, Lindyspring Systems is here to tell you where your water comes from.

Private Well vs City Water

There are two ways to get water to your home in the Lake of the Ozarks area. One way water is supplied to your home is through your local water department. The other way is through a private well at your home. If you live very far outside of town, more than likely you have a private well on your property.

How Does My Well Work?

Most wells in the lake area are drilled wells. A drilled well is approximately 100 to 400 feet deep. Typically, wells have a medal or plastic casing to avoid contaminants from getting into the water supply. However, no well is completely contaminate free. After your well is drilled, a pump is installed and it pumps water from the ground into your home. If you have a well on your property, ask Lindyspring Systems about our sanitizer water conditioning system. This system is known for its ability to kill and remove iron and sulfur bacteria from your well water supply.

City Water Department

If you do not have a private well on your property, then your water supply comes from your city water department. There are two ways that a city water department gets its water. The water either comes from the groundwater, or they have city wells drilled. If you live in the Lake of the Ozarks area, the city has wells drilled that your water comes from. The water from the well is stored in city water towers, from there the water goes to your home.

If your water is supplied from the Osage Beach Water Department, they have 77 miles of water mains, 8811 fire hydrants, 7 wells, and 4 water towers for storage. They currently serve 5,400 users and averages 300 million gallons of water!

If your water is supplied from the Camdenton Water Department, they currently have over 40 miles of water mains, 3 wells, over 400 fire hydrants, and 3 water towers for storage. They currently serve approximately 1,669 users and typically consume an average of 200 million gallons of water a year.

Water Contaminants

Did you know whether you have a private well or water sourced from your city water department, there could be contaminants in your water? These contaminants include iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, and nitrates. Not all of these contaminants are harmful to your body, but they can be an annoyance in your home by causing stains and foul odors. Nitrates, however, can be hazardous to your health. Nitrates are especially harmful to infants and pregnant women.
