Where Does Your Water Come From?

10/31/2018

Water is an important part of our day to day functions. You use water to drink, cook, do the dishes, wash clothes, take a shower, and for numerous other reasons. You probably don't think much about where the water coming out of your tap actually comes from, but it could play a role in the quality of your water. LindySpring Systems is going to share with you the process of how water gets to your home or business.

Private Well or City Water

To determine how water gets to your home, you need to know if you have a private well or if you get water from the local water department. Depending on which one you have, will determine how water gets to your faucet. You should already know this because if you get water from the city water department you receive a water bill every month. If you don't pay for your water, then you have a private well. In some cases, you may have a community well shared by your close neighbors.

Well Water

A private well has a lot of working parts. Inside the well, at the bottom, there is a screen that filters the water from the sand and gravel. A pump then pumps the water to the pitless unit through the drop pipe. From the pitless unit, the water elbows horizontally through the discharge pipe and carries the water into the house. Water goes into the pressure tanks, which stores your water and is also what causes water to go to your faucet. In some cases, water is taken directly to your faucet if it is during a period where you are using a lot of water.

City Water

If you get your water from your county water department, there are two ways that they get their water. They either have city wells or they use groundwater. Whether your county has a series of wells or they get their water from groundwater, once the water is collected, it is stored in a water tower. From the water tower, there are a series of pipes that bring the water to your home.

One of the great things about having city water is you can still get water to your home if the electricity goes out! Think about the last time the power went out at your home, you probably turned on the faucet and water still came out. Have you ever wondered why that is? The reason is pressure! When you turn on your water, the reason water comes out is because the water is under pressure. Water is pushed to your home at a pressure of somewhere between 50 and 100 PSI (pounds per square inch).

So how does all that pressure get built up? The answer is the water tower. There is actually a scientific reason water towers are built so high in the air. Scientists estimate that each foot of a water towers height provides just under a half a pound per square inch of pressure. Depending on where the water tower is built determines how high the tower has to be. If the tower is built in a hilly area, the tower may not have to be as high in the air. If the tower is built in a flat area, the tower will need to be built higher.

Water Conditioning Systems

Whether you have city water or a private well, one thing that can't be guaranteed is the cleanliness of your water. Your private well or city water department does a great job of getting your water to your faucet but in some cases, there could be contaminants or bacteria in your water. Let LindySpring Systems at the Lake of the Ozarks take it from there. We can install a water conditioning system that will reduce these contaminants and bacteria. We have a variety of systems that we can match to your specific needs. From reverse osmosis drinking water systems to a water purifier, and sanitizer water conditioning system.
