Time for a Water Challenge - Healthy Employees Are Productive Employees!

8/15/2019

Raise your hand if you've dealt with a sluggish, seemingly burned out employee recently. We can imagine that's probably about 90% of our business owner viewers. Now, raise your hand if you've come up with a solution to help your employees feel that way. Probably considerably less of you can say that. And that's okay. It's not always easy to know or come up with ways to help your employers feel healthier and, therefore, more productive. That's why we're giving you some tips for starting a water challenge!

Why a Water Challenge?
You're probably wondering 'how is this going to make my employees more productive?' or 'What on earth is a water challenge?'. Don't worry, we'll explain.

Recent studies have shown that drinking water can improve productivity by 14 percent! The reasons? Water eases dehydration and expands the brain's grey matter. According to the researchers, a thirsty person’s brain constantly sends the message of thirst to the body. Satisfying that thirst frees the brain’s attentional resources and improves a person’s ability to function, think and perform better. It also relieves dehydration that saps energy and creates tiredness.

Here are some of the great benefits you can expect from a Water Challenge:
  • Eliminate toxins from your body
  • Enhance metabolism and digestion
  • Improve your energy levels
  • Clear your mind and improve brain function
  • Improve physical performance
  • Clear your skin and make it look younger
Consider the Savings
Starting a water challenge can provide benefits beyond health improvements. Drinking only water for two weeks can free up unnecessary spending, that could in turn be causing your employees financial stress they may not even realize they have. While a $1.50 soda or a $2.99 coffee here and there may not seem like much, it adds up. If your employees are stopping every day to get their daily fix of caffeine, they could be spending roughly $1,100 a year on coffee! Imagine what kind of pressure that could eliminate on your employees financially!

Tips for Starting a Water Challenge
Now that we've fully convinced you that starting a water challenge is a smart choice for your business, it's time to get started! We've got some tips to get you going and how to engage and excite your team to get onboard:

1. Set the Rules
Before you bring this to the team, you may want to have a general idea of rules to follow to ensure everyone is participating fairly. Challenge everyone participating to drink at least 8 oz of water per working hour. So if they work an 8 hour day, they'll ideally consume 64 oz in that period. Designate a specific time frame - for example, the challenge will run for 30 days, the person to consume the most water at the end of the 30 day challenge wins! Each person will be accountable for keeping track of the ounces they drink. Pair off 'accountability' partners to give everyone a motivational partner.

2. Keep a Visual Scoreboard
Speaking of keeping track, let the team keep track of their water intake in a fun way. Get a white board and draw out a table. Color code by person and keep track of their total daily water intake. Having that visual representation will serve as a great reminder for them all to drink throughout the day, and it'll create some competitiveness! Bonus visualization: go to social media with your water challenge! Posting about their successes will likely keep them on track and more involved.

3. Make Water Easily Accessible to Your Staff
Buying or renting an office water cooler is a really affordable way to make water more accessible to your workers. Your workers will enjoy high quality hydration that they can be certain is safe to consume and will taste great as well. They will gain access to an endless supply of perfectly chilled drinking water. And it'll serve as a reminder of the importance of hydration. A simple water cooler can boost productivity and create the perfect workplace environment that everybody in the office will enjoy. pair this with a super awesome water bottle gift to each participant, and you'll be on the right track!

4. Provide Some Incentive
While it may seem like a no brainer that everyone would want to join in on this challenge simply to reap the health and savings benefits it'll provide, some folks may need a bit more motivation. Some ideas could be to have an end of challenge prize (ie: cash prize, gift card, 1 day PTO, etc) More people are likely to get involved if there's competition and a prize at the end.
