When hard water becomes a problem for your household, there are many treatment options available to help alleviate the problem. However, buying a softener outright may not be within your financial abilities or you simply may not want to make a commitment to such a purchase. Thankfully for your convenience, at Lindyspring Systems we offer rental services! We have tons of rental customers who LOVE being able to get soft water by taking advantage our rental program. So, what are the benefits of renting a water softener? Well, there are several reasons that renting is more convenient than buying for some folks. Take a look:

You Can't Afford the Upfront Cost of Buying
The biggest factor for people choosing to rent is the financial side. To most people, the one time upfront fee of purchasing a water softener is daunting and without the relevant knowledge of which to buy, many people can pay too much for the system. By renting, the stress of financing a softener is eradicated. When renting, you'll only worry about a one-time small installation fee, the low monthly rental fee, and the cost for salt!

You Are Renting or Don't Plan to Reside Long in Your Home
Renting is often considered a short-term solution to an individual’s hard water problems. If you are undecided about the length of your tenure in your current property, then renting may be the best solution for you. There is very low commitment associated with rental because when you decide to move, you don't have to worry about relocating your water softener. You can just contact your Lindyspring provider and they will remove the softener for you and even move and reinstall it for you in your new property if you wish to continue renting!

You Don't Have to Worry About Maintenance or Repairs
When you rent a water softener through Lindyspring Systems, any maintenance issues that arise is handled by us. So besides making sure you're maintaining the salt levels as recommended, you can leave the maintenance worries to us! What's even better, is that our rental clients are very important to us - so if an issue does arise, we provide same day or next day service to ensure your softener is functioning properly without hassle or little downtime.

So, if you've got hard water problems, but don't want to purchase a water softener, you've got options! At Lindyspring Systems, we can help make sure you get the size of unit that is exactly right for your needs as well as install it in the most professional manner possible. Our rental softeners are typically new or in like new condition, so you don't have to worry about getting an old worn out model from us! For All Your Household & Commercial Water Conditioning and Treatment Needs Count on LINDYSPRING!

Many people wonder if buying a water softener at the Lake of the Ozarks is worth the money. We at Lindyspring Systems know that not only is it worth the money you'll spend on getting one, but it'll save you a lot of trouble and expense in the long run. To better help you understand the benefits of having a water softener at the Lake of the Ozarks, we've answered some frequently asked questions for your convenience.

Can you drink soft water?

Although many people believe soft water should not be drunk because of the sodium content, most do not realize how little sodium is in the water. Over 95% of our minerals come from our food and less than 5% from drinking water. The amount of sodium a water softener adds to tap water depends on the “Hardness” of your water. The higher the concentration of calcium and magnesium, the more sodium needed to soften the water. Still, the amount of sodium in softened water that was originally very hard shouldn’t be cause for concern. (www.MayoClinic.com)

Why does soft water not rinse the soap off? Showering in soft water makes my skin feel “slick”.

Showering in soft water may give you the sensation that soap and shampoo haven’t been rinsed away.  The “slick” feeling is actually your skin and hair thoroughly clean. Bathing with soft water, skin and hair retain natural moisturizing agents, feeling softer and smoother. Your skin will be healthier all winter long and not be so dry and itchy. Hair needs less conditioner and will not get so much build up on it from styling products.

Are water softeners expensive to operate?

A water softener is the only household appliance that can save you money. The cost of the electricity it uses is less than $6.00 per year. Soft water will help your appliances such as your water heater and dishwasher run more efficiently and last longer. Soft water also uses 50-70% less detergent to laundry and dishes. A Lindyspring water softener can also save you hours of housework by eliminating mineral deposits and soap scum on your fixtures.

Should I buy an electronic or magnetic device to soften my water?

Do not be fooled! While a lot of these devices do exist, only water softeners soften water. In the industry these magnets are referred to as “Descalers”, not softeners. They may be effective in certain applications as descalers, but they do not remove the hardness of the water. All of the benefits of softened water are forfeited. These items are sold with testimonials and a money back 90 day guarantee, but there is no scientific evidence to support their claims. If it sounds too good to be true, then it most likely is!

Can the discharge from a water softener’s regeneration damage my septic system or drainfield?

In studies conducted by the University of Wisconsin in the late 1970s, it was confirmed that salt brine discharge from water softeners caused no problems in the operation of typical and newer style home treatment plants. High concentrations of calcium and manganese in the softener backwash water have no effect on the biological functions occurring in the septic tank and may, in some cases be helpful. The additional volume of wastewater generated is added slowly to the wastewater stream and does not cause any hydraulic overload problems. (Corey et al., 1977)

Do water softeners waste water and salt?

When you are shopping for a water softener at the Lake of the Ozarks, be sure to check the specifications for efficiency. If sized properly, a water softener will only regenerate 1 or 2 times per week. Always look for an electronic demand softener which meters water usage and adjusts accordingly. With the use of new technology such as upflow brining and metered electronic demand, today’s water softeners are much more efficient than those of yesteryear. It is not uncommon for a good quality softener to use less than 2 pounds of salt and less than 30 gallons of water per regeneration. Remember this piece of trivia – the total amount of water used to manufacture a new car, including tires is 39,090 gallons. Softeners do not waste water!

So get your green on, grab the family and check out some of these great "Irish" dishes that'll have your entire family feeling lucky and full!

Corned Beef and Cabbage
A corned beef supper makes a glorious Irish feast, and this one couldn't be any simpler to make!

Here's what you'll need:

• 2 celery stalks, cut into 3-inch pieces
• 3 carrots, cut into 3-inch pieces
• 1 small yellow onion, cut into 1-inch wedges (root end left intact)
• 1/2 pound small potatoes, halved if large
• 6 sprigs thyme
• 1 corned beef brisket (about 3 pounds)
• 1 tablespoon pickling spice
• 1/2 head Savoy cabbage, cut into 1 1/2-inch wedges
• Grainy mustard, for serving

In a 5-to-6-quart slow cooker, place celery, carrots, onion, potatoes, and thyme. Place corned beef, fat side up, on top of vegetables and sprinkle with pickling spice; add enough water to almost cover meat (4 to 6 cups). Cover and cook on high until corned beef is tender, 4 1/4 hours (or 8 1/2 hours on low). Arrange cabbage over corned beef, cover, and continue cooking until cabbage is tender, 45 minutes (or 1 1/2 hours on low). Thinly slice corned beef against the grain and serve with vegetables, cooking liquid, and grainy mustard. (Get recipe and ingredient list here)

Traditional Irish Shepherd's Pie
When you're in the mood for a meaty, savory comfort-food classic, a traditional Irish shepherd's pie is an excellent choice!

• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
• 1 lb ground beef or 1 lb lamb
• 1 large onion, finely diced
• 3 -4 large carrots, finely diced

• 2 tablespoons flour
• 1 tablespoon butter
• 1 glass red wine
• 2 tablespoons tomato paste
• 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1 cup chicken stock
• 1 large quantity mashed potatoes (estimating 1L or 6 cups, fresh or leftover)
• 1 egg, beaten
• grated parmesan cheese (optional)

Green Water is NOT Okay!
While the American-Irish way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day is to deck yourself (and your foods/beverages) out in green, your drinking water should NOT be green coming from the tap! Green or blueish tinted water can be harmful to your body and usually means your home’s water has excessive levels of copper. And if humans absorb too much copper (either via skin, inhalation or ingestion), it can cause a number of problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and increase your risk of liver and kidney problems.

If you're gearing up to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and notice a green tint to your tap water, contact Lindyspring Systems to come out and test your water source! We can determine what type of water treatment system is best for your household needs to ensure your drinking water is safe to consume! Got questions about our water treatment services? Give us a call today! We're happy to answer your questions. We hope you enjoy these "Irish" recipes and have a great St. Patrick's Day weekend!

For All Your Household Water Conditioning and Treatment Needs Count on LINDYSPRING!

One of the most important things you can do for yourself to improve your health is to drink plenty of water. It's even been said that drinking water is a natural elixir of life. But with all the hectic tasks of daily life and the fact that water is virtually tasteless, sometimes it's difficult to motivate yourself to drink the recommended daily amount. So, this week, Lindyspring Systems is offering 5 clever ways to get yourself to drink more water.

1. Add Some Flavor
Meeting the recommended daily intake of water each day can seem like torture when every cup is tasteless. Add a bit of flavor by infusing fresh fruit, veggies, and/or herbs to your water. If you're on the run and don't have time to prepare an infused drink, you can also get the grab and go flavor packets from your local grocer and throw a few in your bag so you've got them with you wherever you go.

2. Sip Before Each Meal

Drinking 16 oz. of water before meals can help you lose weight. It helps to fill your stomach, making you feel fuller so you eat less during mealtimes. Just knowing that drinking up can help you eat less should be enough motivation to grab a glass. So next time you sit down for lunch with friends or co-workers, drink a glass of water before your server takes your order.

3. Use an App to Remind You

It's noon. How many glasses of water have you had so far? It's easy to lose track, especially when you're so busy at work and with other daily life activities. And unfortunately if you're not keeping track, you're risking the chance of dehydration. Keeping up with how many glasses you’ve finished can be easy with the help of a free app. Download a free water intake tracker app to your phone to keep track of how much water you've had. If you're not into downloading apps, you can always set a few alerts on your phone throughout the day to remind yourself to hit the water cooler.

4. Eat Water-Rich Foods

One sneaky way to increase the amount of water you consume on a daily basis is to eat foods that are water-rich. Add fruits and vegetables with a high water content to your grocery shopping list, such as cucumber, zucchini, watermelon, celery, and grapefruit. Not only will you be improving your health by eating your daily recommended amount of fruits and veggies, but you'll also be increasing your daily water intake without even thinking about it!

Water softeners perform an extremely important job, removing minerals such as calcium and magnesium from the water in your home. But just like any other appliance, a water softener will only last for so long. Eventually, components break, electrical problems occur, and it just stops working. While they can last much longer if well maintained, water softeners have a typical lifespan of between 10 and 15 years. If you are softening extremely hard water or well water with iron, your equipment may need to be replaced sooner. If your water softener was installed more than a decade ago, it may be time to replace it with a newer model. Learning how to spot the signs of your water softener starting to fail can help you determine if its time for an upgrade.

Common Signs Your Water Softener Isn’t Working Properly
Here are four things to watch for that could indicate your water softener needs to be serviced or replaced.

1. Not Enough Lather
One of the telltale signs of hard water is soap refusing to lather. If you notice that you are having a hard time soaping up in the shower, you may need to check your water softener. You may notice that you are going through shampoo and soap a lot faster than usual, as you need to use more to make a decent lather.

2. Laundry Problems
Washing your clothes in hard water can make them stiff and scratchy. Fabric softener can counteract this stiffness to some extent, but a more effective solution is to make sure your water softener is functioning properly to effectively remove the minerals that are making the clothes stiff.

Hard water can damage a washing machine as well as other appliances such as hot water heaters and dishwashers. To protect those appliances, it is important to check to make sure your water softener is functioning properly.

3. Crusty Buildup Around Pipes and Faucets
The minerals that are naturally present in hard water can cause a crusty buildup around your pipes and faucets. Pay attention to your faucets when you are cleaning the kitchen and bathroom. If you notice a chalky substance building up around them, this could be a sign that you need to take a look at your softener.

4. Your Water Tastes Different
Hard water tastes different than soft water. Some people prefer the smooth taste of soft water and will notice if the water supply to their home begins to have increased mineral content. If you’re drinking water straight from the tap, pay attention to changes in taste, as it could mean your softener needs to be serviced or replaced.

Benefits of a New Water Softener
Replacing an old water softener can make your life at home much easier. If your water hasn’t been getting properly softened, it means you’ve likely been dealing with common hard water problems like those mentioned above. A new water softener could make it easier to keep your house clean, provide you with softer clothes, and better hair and skin. It also helps ensure your water-using appliances last at least as long as you’d expect.

Getting a new water softener also allows you to take advantage of updated features and technologies in water treatment. Much like upgrading a furnace, most modern day furnaces will be more efficient than one 15 years old. Water softeners are the same way, but there are even more advanced features as well. For example, you could purchase a water softener equipped with settings to refresh your system proportionally, helping you save on salt and conserve water. Salt monitors can alert you when you need to add water softener salts, chlorine generators can keep your system clean, and there are even innovations that connect softeners to Wi-Fi.
